Cortona Sessions for New Music

One of the world's premiere educational programs dedicated to the creation and performance of contemporary music, the Cortona Sessions for New Music is a destination for emerging composers and performers seeking to collaborate, learn, grow, and create. Held each summer in the Tuscan village of Cortona, Italy, the Sessions provide participants with an inspiring and supportive environment in which new music is explored in all its shapes, sizes, and colors. Each day at the Sessions is filled with classes, workshops, and rehearsals, and each evening features a concert performed by our resident ensemble, the Cortona Collective, or by the amazing performers who come to study with us each year. The finale of each Sessions includes two days of concerts premiering new musical works written by the cohort of Composition Fellows.

The Sessions feature a faculty of renowned composers and specialists in contemporary music performance, including our resident Cortona Collective ensemble. The Sessions also regularly welcomes featured guest artists, who in the past have included Pauline Oliveros, Frederic Rzewski, and Du Yun. Since the founding of the Sessions in 2010, alumni of the Cortona Sessions have created their own new music concert series, joined university faculties, entered contemporary performance programs at leading conservatories, been winners of major composition prizes, and worked alongside many of the leading voices in contemporary music today.
